17,1 mio. The project aims to develop a symbiotic teleoperation solution to the Wind Turbine Blade (WTB) maintenance. The current solution to the WTB maintenance largely relies on human technicians who must be hung by ropes from the nacelle of a wind turbine and perform demanding maintenance tasks, such as, sanding and coating, on a blade. Such kind of tasks require dexterous manipulation skills based on careful observation, sensitive touch, and rich experience of humans, which is the main reason why the technicians must take care of these tasks in person despite the high risk of working at height and these tasks are very hard to be automated by using specialized machines. In this project, we aim to develop a robotic teleoperation system to solve this challenge. The technicians can be trained to use the system to receive visual feedback through extended reality technology (careful observation), haptic feedback through wearable haptics technology (sensitive touch), and teleoperate a remote robot on a blade to perform the tasks through a skill learning and transfer system (rich experience). This proposed solution is expected to largely reduce the risk of working at height for the technicians and cut down the cost of the WTB maintenance, and becomes a safe, cost-efficient, and SENSIBLE solution. EU intends to double the wind capacity by 2030 to reduce CO2 emissions towards the politically prioritized mission of Green Transition. The demand for this innovative solution is urgent and huge.
