Utilsigtede skader på urinlederne, som transporterer urin fra nyrerne til blæren, er en komplikation ved kirurgi i bækkenet, som kan have store konsekvenser for patienterne såsom blodforgiftning, nyresvigt og i værste tilfælde dødsfald. Derudover medfører det store omkostninger for samfundet, at patienter skal gen-opereres, igennem længere hospitalsindlæggelser og er uarbejdsdygtige i lang tid.
Skaderne på urinlederne sker, fordi de kan være svære at identificere og kirurger kan bruge lang tid på at lede efter dem - eller i værste tilfælde ende med at brænde eller skære dem over. Størstedelen af skaderne opstår under operationer for kvindesygdomme, hvilket medfører, at skaderne uforholdsvis rammer flere kvinder end mænd.
Rheia Medical udvikler en ny type medicinsk udstyr, som kan hjælpe kirurger med at identificere urinlederne under en bækkenoperation for at højne patientsikkerheden og nedbringe tiden brugt på at finde urinlederne. Rheia Medicals device kan betjenes af både sygeplejersker og læger, og bygger ovenpå og optimerer eksisterende praksis på operationsstuerne.
