31.1 mill. As a response to the ongoing environmental and energy crises, Photovoltaics (solar panels) are increasingly being installed on farmland in Denmark and Europe. This development has taken place despite the fact that agricultural land is a scare resource needed to feed the Worlds rapidly increasing food demand.
An important next step in this development is AgriPhotoVoltaic systems that benefit from dual use of farm land areas by combining electricity production with agricultural production. This allows for more than agricultural land area carbon neutrality by offsetting the remaining production emissions. However, the present photovoltaics systems are not designed to facilitate cultivation of food crops, but solely for maximizing energy production. AGRIVOLT will in a full-scale experiment investigate the potentials and limitations of using an AgriPV system installed on high-productive farmland.
The project consortium consists of the four partners European Energy, Aarhus University, University of Copenhagen and Slagelse Municipality. All partners provide important and complimenting technology and knowledge on photovoltaics, cropping systems and food production, biodiversity, management of field robots and economic and sociological knowledge to secure both the technical and agricultural success of the project and to uncover challenges and solutions for the implementation and path to the market.

1.1 mill. Hvert år bruges der mere end 4.1 millioner tons kemiske pesticider, men på trods af dette store forbrug, så mister vi alligevel 20-40% af vores afgrøder, pga. skadedyr og plantesygdomme. Disse tab koster den globale økonomi mere end 1.5 billiarder kroner, samtidigt med at de kemiske pesticider er skadelige for biodiversitet, drikkevand, og menneskers sundhed. I AgroAnt arbejder vi for at mindske afgrøde tabet, og samtidigt gøre landbruget grønnere og mere bæredygtigt. Her har vi fundet en lille løsning, med stort potentiale - myren. I AgroAnt leaser vi myrer til økologiske landmænd og frugtavlere, så de kan beskytte deres afgrøder mod skadedyr og sygdomme. Kort sagt, bruger vi myrer i stedet for kemiske pesticider. Denne form for beskyttelse kaldes biologisk bekæmpelse, dvs. vi bruger en levende organisme til at bekæmpe skadevoldere i afgrøderne. Myrer har længe været kendt for netop at være gode til biologisk bekæmpelse af skadedyr, da de spiser mange forskellige insekter. Gennem vores forskning, har vi dog fundet ud af at myrerne også er i stand til at bekæmpe genstridige plantesygdomme, som bl.a. æbleskurv på æbler. Brugen af myrer i landbruget er ikke nogen ny idé. I år 304, blev der på kinesiske markeder solgt myrer, så landmænd kunne købe myrerne, og installere dem i deres citrusplantager. For dengang var det almen viden, at hvis man ikke havde myrer i sine træer, så ville man få grimme frugter og en dårlig høst. I AgroAnt, tager vi denne viden ind i det 21. Århundrede.
